Williamson Open Exhibition 25th January - 23rd February
100 years ago, the new Birkenhead Museum and Art Gallery in Argyle
Street held its first open exhibitions, primarily for local artists.
That initiative lasted for only two years as the First World War got in
the way. 50 years later, Wallasey Borough Council started their own
local open exhibition and it is that tradition that we have continued in
the Wirral Spring Exhibition, first held at the Williamson 30 years
ago. For 2014 there is a slight change to the 'Williamson Open', still
representing the best of artists and photographers born, educated,
living or working in Wirral.
Henry Moore: in the Arts Council Collection 8th February - 13th April
Henry Moore is an important figure for the Arts Council Collection. He
was a key advisor to the acquisitions committee during the early 1950s,
shaping the collection by championing post-war British sculpture. His
representation within the collection is also very strong, and it is an
exciting opportunity to see the delightful domestic rather than the
monumental scale of some of his work. The exhibition at the Williamson
offers an opportunity to enjoy 24 items: prints, sculptures and drawings
spanning five decades.
