ALUMNI PORTRAIT PROJECT: From the 5th of March 2015

ALUMNI PORTRAIT PROJECT

The Alumni Portrait Project celebrates the work of nine photographers aged between 12 and 19 years.
Building on skills learnt from New Elements I and II the young people embarked on an ambitious process to photograph and interview over 50 Alumni, all former members of Wirral Youth Theatre (WYT), recording their stories and reflecting the influence of WYT on their adult lives. The group were outstanding in their dedication and creative input into this programme, rising to the challenge of using a 40 year old film camera, light meter, tripod and manually setting the aperture and shutter speed to control the light to create the shot they had planned.

Over a 3 month period, these young photographers improved their technical skills through classroom
based study and hands on practical sessions using digital and film cameras and experimenting with
different lighting techniques. They received talks from guest speakers who enlightened them on various
artists and photographers and their different interpretations of portraiture. They learnt interviewing techniques from a journalist, which helped form the questions they were to ask. The final prints not only reflect their level of technical skill and understanding of light and exposure,  they also show the group’s ability to capture the essence of an individual’s personality. The Alumni photographers were involved in all aspects of the image making and production process from the initial technical learning and mastering of a medium format camera, to developing skills in critical and creative reflection to narrow down the final set of images. The exhibition reflects their commitment to the project, willingness to learn, hard work and creative
flair. Through the quirks and charm of film photography young people have created an impressive body of work that celebrates the impact that WYT, now known as Wirral Creative Youth Development, has had in shaping the lives of young people.
