The Williamson Art Gallery and Wirral Museum needs your vote
The Williamson is one of five national venues that the public will be called on to vote for to win the opportunity to host a major exhibition in October working with internationally known artists, Davy and Kristin McGuire.
The Williamson Art Gallery and Museum, Birkenhead short-listed bid to Connnect! is to enable the McGuires to use two marble statues, ‘Pauline’ and ‘Love’ to create a series of grottos. Using projections, lighting, textures, sound and print, the gallery will be transformed into an enchanted garden animating a narrative imagined and developed with staff and visitors. As well as the exhibition, the Williamson team and Friends of the Williamson is successful in the vote will create a special ticketed gala evening around the theme of the McGuire’s artwork and hope it will be as successful as the BAFTA gala held earlier this year.
The competition is part of the forthcoming Museums at Night, which will explode into life from Wednesday 13 – Saturday 16 May 2015 and Friday 30 – Saturday 31 October 2015. The bi-annual UK-wide festival attracts visitors into museums, galleries and heritage sites by throwing their doors open after hours and putting on special evening events. Co-ordinated by non-profit cultural publishing organisation Culture24, Museums at Night is an opportunity for the cultural and heritage sector to come together around a single, simple campaign that is attractive to venues, audiences and the media.
Nick Stockman, Culture24 Campaigns Manager said: “This year the Connect! competition is more exciting than ever with voting taking place during the May Museums at Night festival and the artist-led events in October. All of the competing venues have wonderfully creative ideas for what they’d like their chosen artist to do if they win. Now every venue will be trying their hardest to get people to vote for them: we’d like to wish all the museums, galleries and heritage sites the best of luck!”
The vote can only be made online. This is the URL where the McGuires Connect! voting poll will appear: http://bit.ly/mcguires. The organisers will only accept one vote per email address. Voting will only be registered between Friday the 1st of May from 11am and Saturday the 16th of May at 8pm. The announcement for winning venue will be made at 9pm on the same night.
Alison Bailey Smith of the Friends of the Williamson Art Gallery and Wirral Museums is clearly pleased with the opportunity:-
“We are delighted to be the only organisation in Merseyside to be short-listed for the potential to host the McGuires in the area. We will need as many votes from the entire region to gain the public vote as we are up against some very prestigious cultural hubs - Dulwich Picture Gallery in London, Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford, The Royal Armouries in Leeds and Russell-Cotes Art Gallery and Museum, in Bournemouth. We are hoping the opportunity to work with Davy and Kristen McGuire would give new creative insight into our existing collections, including a lovely marble statue called "Pauline" that has watched over exhibitions for over 70 years. The shortlist was announced in the same week we heard that the Williamson was in the running for a Wirral Tourism Award which we thankfully went on to win -Wirral Tourism Team of the Year so everything hopefully is going in the right direction to keep the building alive and lively."
